ARC Review: The Last of the Fire Witches by Chelsea Biddiscombe

 Tackling the TBR:

I received an advance review copy for free of The Last of the Fire Witches by Chelsea Biddiscombe! Sharing with you my spoiler free review (spoiler free is so hard when there are so many things you enjoyed in a book and want to call out!)

From the very first pages, the premise of the story is compelling. Aurie is the last of her kind, forced to hide her identity in a world that would like to see her destroyed. I like the use of legacy and survival and right from the jump, it's there for the reader to experience and learn about.

The world building is pretty solidly done by Biddiscombe. I liked the covens, kingdoms and the explanation and exploration of magic throughout the series. The characters themselves were compelling and easy to identify who I was going to love, who I was going to hate and who I was going to feel just "meh" about. I will say, I do wish there was a little more character description provided, but luckily my imagination is able to run wild and create my own expectations of their looks.

I liked the connection the MMC and protagonist developed throughout the story. All in all, the story moved at a good pace, and there were intense moments but also quieter scenes to explore things like loyalty, love, and destiny. The political landscape is also interesting in the book and I think many will enjoy reading about it!

I would say, the tropes are familiar and didn't feel too original. With reading as much as I do, I personally like originality and not seeing plot twists coming, or authors taking a leap and trying to create a new and different trope. I'd love to see more of that in the future (my personal preference, nothing at all wrong with the approach the author took because the story was good!).

All in all, it was a good start to a new series. While it wasn't a 5 star read for me, most first books aren't and the series still develops into one that you can't imagine you life with never having read it! I think the potential for this series is unlimited. I think the author will continue to fine tune their skill (such as utilizing descriptions more and balancing where to overshare/under share). I look forward to the second book in the series!

Happy reading!
